Week Twenty-One Book Seventeen--Radiant Darkness

Ever heard the story of Persephone? In Greek mythology, Persephone is the daughter of Demeter (the goddess of wheat/harvest). According to legend, Hades, god of the Underworld, kidnapped Persephone and forced her to be his wife. She is allowed to spend half the year with her mother (summer) and half the year with Hades (winter) as a result of this kidnapping.

Well this book takes on Persephone's story, but Persephone tells it with a much different twist: she wasn't kidnapped but CHOSE to marry Hades and escape her suffocating mother. In fact, Demeter seems more of the villain than Hades.

I thought this was a great story, because it introduced so many mythological characters in a non-threatening way. And it gave a voice to a character we don't see very often--Persephone--as a young woman longing for freedom of choice. And I actually started to appreciate Hades! He didn't seem as scary or evil as he is often portrayed. If you liked The Lightning Thief series, this would be an interesting comparison on characters.
