Last week I went to a conference in Fort Wayne, so I picked up an audiobook from the public library to "read" on the way. I chose The Boy Who Dared by Susan Campbell Bartoletti--a very powerful book! You should pick it up, too! Let me explain it:Helmuth Hubener, a young German teen, has been charged with treason during WWII and is waiting execution in a Berlin prison. He has many flashbacks that show his life and what brought him to this awful situation. He describes life with his mother, brothers, and grandparents in Nazi Germany; he eventually gets a Nazi soldier stepfather with strong Nazi beliefs. But growing up in this environment doesn't mean that Helmuth fully understands it, and he soon starts to question the lifestyle that Hitler requires. He uses a forbidden radio to listen to British broadcasts and decides that he must get the word out about the truth behind the war. But the truth may not set him free...
Like I said, a very powerful book with such a strong message. And don't expect a happy-feeling ending...this is based off a true story and accurately portrays life in war-torn Germany.
