Week 36 Book 36--Somewhere Inside

Wait! Did you see the title of this entry??!! I caught up! I believe I was six weeks behind at some point, but Spring Break definitely helped me catch up...I just have three more weeks to stay on track!

Lisa Ling has always been one of my favorite journalists. I started watching her through Channel One, a teenage news show, and stayed with her through her time with National Geographic, The View, and even The Oprah Winfrey Show. So I was completely shocked when I heard that Lisa's sister, Laura, and a producer were captured in North Korea, the world's most isolated country, while recording a story for Current TV. The women and their videographer had been in China and had unknowingly crossed into North Korean territory.

Throughout an unbelievable ordeal, including being tried and sentenced to twelve years in a North Korean labor camp, Laura and producer Euna Lee nevertheless hung on to hope and were rescued by former President Bill Clinton. In this book Laura tells the entire story, from how she was sent to China for the assignment to how she was interrogated, tried, and eventually brought home. Lisa also tells the story from her point of view and how she and her family tirelessly used their connections to free Laura.

This was an excellent book...and even my husband loved it (he's not a reader)! The story will grip you. We sure don't realize what freedoms we have here in the U.S. until we compare them to all that the North Koreans don't have--at least that's my opinion.
