Fat Cat by Robin Brande questions our modern way of living. Cat, a junior enrolled in a heavy-duty science research class, has to create a science project worthy of a science fair. And she has chosen to live like hominins, the supposedly-earliest humans that lived on Earth. That means no technology, no driving, no processed foods, no make-up, no hair products...you get the picture. She has a few exceptions, of course--she has to bathe and can't walk distances too far away--but for the most part she sticks to the plan to see the effects of early human living. And the results are pretty dramatic--I'll let you read them for yourself--but they're definitely worth a look!
Mingled with this is Cat's INSANE desire to beat Matt McKinney at the science fair. Her former friend turned traitor has been the bane of her existence since seventh grade, and even though she can't help but be intrigued by him, she refuses to let her motions override her desire to beat him.
I really enjoyed this book--I found her project super-interesting (I actually agree with many of the changes she made, even being a vegetarian!) and the side story with Matt helped move the plot along. The ending was satisfying and overall I just felt good about the story.
Definitely a recommendation!
