Ok, maybe I'm catching up in this challenge? It's only Tuesday and I've finished a book! But I shouldn't jinx myself, because I still have a ways to go to catch up...I read Daughter of War by Marsha Skrypuch...and I hate to say it again...but ugh. It's historical fiction (which I love!) and focuses on Armenian refugees trying to survive in Turkey. Interesting subject matter, especially since I don't know much about the subject.
However, I feel the novel falls so flat. I'll admit that I was bored. Even the cover was boring--it looked like nonfiction--and the book printing made it seem a bit unprofessional (no author information, etc.). However, at least let me tell you more about the characters before I turn you away from it!
Teenagers Kevork and Marta are two teenagers who are hiding as refugees. Separated during a deportation, Kevork is posing as an Arab in Syria while Marta has become pregnant by a Turkish man. Kevork is desperate to return to Turkey to find Marta, but the genocide has made it incredibly difficult. And Marta fears that if Kevork finds her pregnant, he will no longer want her. So the quest to return to each other is not an easy one.
The plot sounds great, but I think it just fell flat. The writing style just didn't keep me hoping for Kevork and Marta's reunion. I'm reading another book now that seems to be GREAT, so there's hope for me in this challenge yet!
