Week 26 Book 22--By The Time You Read This I'll Be Dead

Daelyn Rice has had a pretty miserable life...and that's an understatement. She's been bullied, tormented, assaulted, ridiculed, and more by her classmates and teachers. Her parents' way of dealing with this is to have her change schools, but that doesn't give any relief. So Daelyn makes a HUGE decision to just end it all...and fails. Now she wears a neck brace and eats blended food to protect her damaged throat. When she finds a website, Through-the-Light.com, that seems to assist people in making it to the "other side," Daelyn becomes obsessed and plans her "Day of Determination." But a boy that won't leave her alone after school and her frantic parents may just get in the way of her plans...

Ugh, what is wrong with me? I am just not enjoying the books I've been reading! This book is soooooooooooooo depressing...if you aren't depressed before reading it, you definitely will be afterwards! And what's even more difficult in these books is the slow plot--nothing really happens except for Daelyn's depressing inner thoughts. The action finally starts to pick up at the end but it is too late and doesn't deliver. And after being patient through the whole plot, the ending is much too vague--I felt so cheated!

I'm going to be brutally honest and say I don't think this book belongs in our collection. I understand that suicide can be valuable in YA literature, and we have some great options in our library...I think this one is just too depressing. If you're interested, though, you can find it at the public library.
