Week Eight Book Ten--The Lightning Thief

Last week was a BIG week for me--I helped choose next year's Rosie books! So I've been doing a lot of book scanning lately...basically scanning a list of 75 books to see what I think is Rosie-worthy. But next year's list is AWESOME!

So now I'm back to my reading challenge...I'm still one week ahead, so I'm doing great!

I know I'm a little behind the bandwagon because I just read The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan for the first time. I couldn't keep this series on the shelf last year because it was so popular. It had a big reputation, and for the most part I'd definitely say it lived up to that.

It follows a demigod, Percy Jackson, who discovers that the father who has been missing from his life is actually Poseidon, god of the sea. And because of his status, monsters and gods are now after him. He gets sent on a quest to retrieve Zeus' lightning bolt, which was supposedly stolen by Hades. Not an easy quest, especially for a young kid new to the whole gods-goddesses-world.

I thought this was a great action-packed back, kind of like Harry Potter. I only had a few qualms with it. One, I'm not too familiar with Greek mythology, so sometimes I had a difficult time understanding all of the gods/goddesses references. Two, I found the characters to be a little too gullible at times. On his quest, Percy practically runs into a monster at EVERY stop, yet he seems surprised every time. By the fourth time, he probably should have gotten used to the pattern.

But this was definitely a great read, and I can't wait to finish the series!
