I finished on Tuesday night this week; I'm on a roll and heading early to book #5!This week I read You Don't Even Know Me by Sharon Flake, a collection of short stories and poetry about African American males. Now obviously I am a Caucasian female, so this was a great book to give me another view of everyday life.
Now I'll be honest...I wasn't jumping for joy when I picked up this book. And that's solely because I'm not a huge fan of short stories. I don't know what it is about them, but I just prefer to have a book with a continual storyline the whole way through; in other words, I don't like stopping and starting stories. But these stories were pretty good. They included all kinds of characters and gave a great variety of lifeviews. A few even had unexpected endings, which I always love. I'd say my favorites were the story about the teenager and his obese father (it was a heartbreaker!) and the story of the newly-married teen. And the poetry was excellent--easy to read, comprehend, and appreciate!
So this was a nice change of pace for me...even though it's something I'd normally pass up, it was a great selection of stories to keep me thinking about life. Lesson learned...always give something a try!
